Fear is the Mind Killer

Fear is the Mind Killer
3 min readAbhi

"I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer." If you have watched the movie Dune, you might recognize this quote from Bene Gesserit. It is a powerful reminder that fear can paralyze us and prevent us from reaching our full potential. In this blog post, I want to explore the nature of fear, how it affects our lives, and strategies to overcome it.

Fear

Oxford dictionary defines fear as "the bad feeling that you have when you are in danger or when a particular thing frightens you" and "a feeling of concern about somebody's safety or about something bad that might happen". Fear is a natural response to danger, but it can also be irrational and hold us back from pursuing our goals. It can manifest in various forms, such as fear of failure, fear of rejection, or fear of the unknown.

'Be fearless' is easy to say, but it is not as easy to practice. And that's the basic human trait. We are wired to avoid pain and seek pleasure, which is why fear can be so powerful. It can create a mental barrier that prevents us from taking risks and stepping out of our comfort zones. However, it is essential to recognize that fear is not always a bad thing. It can serve as a protective mechanism, alerting us to potential dangers and helping us make informed decisions.

Levellling yourself one step up in your personal growth journey or professional career or even in your social life requires you to face your fears. It is through facing our fears that we can grow and develop resilience. By confronting our fears, we can learn to manage them and reduce their impact on our lives.

As in Gita, Lord Krishna says to Arjuna, "You have the right to perform your prescribed duties, but you are not entitled to the fruits of your actions." Fear often stems from our attachment to outcomes and the desire for control. By focusing on the process rather than the results, we can alleviate some of the fear associated with uncertainty.

If you want to take 'leaps of faith' in life, you need to embrace fear as a natural part of the journey. It is not about eliminating fear entirely but learning to navigate it and use it as a catalyst for growth. From personal experiences, surrounding yourself with supportive and like-minded people helps in overcoming fear. Your brain perceives a certain task as impossible, cause you (or your mind) have never been exposed to it before. If you make yourself a least wise person in the room surrounded by people who are more experienced and knowledgeable, your mind will perceive the task as achievable and sets a new benchmark for your brain to work towards. This is how you can overcome fear and achieve your goals.

“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.”

- Frank Herbert, Dune
